This year, with sponsorship from Sigma, I will be leading workshops on everything from landscapes to macro, from seascapes and waterfalls to fall foliage and insects. Sites range across the United States, from California to New York.
The small-group workshops begin March 13th at Point Reyes National Seashore, California, focusing on extraordinary seascapes. We will welcome Bay Area photographer Patrick Smith, who will assist in this coastal landscapes workshop. Shooting will go until sunset, with two classroom sessions in between.
The following weekend, May 22nd, the workshop series moves to Watkins Glen State Park, New York, where noted naturalist and local author Tony Ingraham will lead our expedition into the famous gorge. Watkins Glen offers all kinds of waterfalls, from gentle cascades to plunge falls. If you haven’t been to the Glen, it’s time to visit. It’s amazing. Spring is an exceptional time to photograph watery features in both of these locations.
The San Diego Zoo is one of the best zoos in the country; that’s why we’ve chosen it as the location of two one-day workshops in mid-June. We will work our way around the zoo in a small group (limited to a dozen participants), stopping for mini lessons on lighting, lens selection, composition, and other techniques. One session is on Saturday the 12th; the other is on Sunday the 13th.
In July the workshop series travels to Arizona, visiting Madera Canyon, one of the top insect locations in the country. For this July 24th workshop, noted entomologist Eric Eaton, author of the Kaufman Guide to Insects, will join us, leading the field collecting and helping with natural history and identification questions.
The final workshop will be a weekend fall foliage foray in the glaciated hills of Ohio. Mohican State Park features a deep gorge, beautiful red and sugar maples, and several waterfalls. In addition, we will travel to Malabar Farm State Park, shooting in and around Rock City Cave. Fall in Mohican is something special.
